Samujjal Bhattacharjya Demands Best Care for Akhil

Calls to release jailed peasant leader Akhil Gogoi are growing louder throughout the state. Underscoring the alleged inhumane treatment being meted out to him and his associates, scores of people are demanding their immediate release as well as advanced treatment for them.

Now, the Chief Advisor to All Assam Students' Union (AASU) Dr. Samujjal Bhattacharjya has come out vociferously against the "inhuman treatment meted out to Akhil Gogoi and his associates by the Government."

In a tweet, he wrote, "Strongly condemn the inhuman treatment meted out to Akhil Gogoi and his associates by the Government. They must be given the best medical care. Reiterate our demand for the immediate release of #AkhilGogoi and his associates."

The demand to release Gogoi and his associates has found a new lease of life ever since KMSS leaders Dharjya Konwar and Bitu Sonowal have tested COVID-19 positive. There have been accusations of willful negligence on the government's part with respect to the attention to their worsening health.

While Konwar and Sonowal were eventually moved to GMCH for treatment, Gogoi is still in the Guwahati Central Jail (GCJ). Although there were initial reports of Gogoi carrying the contagion, the jailer of GCJ later denied them and announced that the leader tested negative for the virus.
