SC to hear plea seeking NRC re-verification

The Supreme Court will hear a plea seeking ‘purification’ of the recently published National Register of Citizens (NRC) on Friday. Abhijeet Sarma-led Assam Public Works (APW) had sought re-verification of the list of citizens.

“We have been saying that there are names of a large number of foreigners in the NRC,” said Sarma.

On the other hand, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has also filed a petition at the apex court seeking a thorough modification of the NRC to pass over the errors. AASU claimed that a number of genuine Indians especially the indigenous people have left out from the list.

It may be mentioned here that the final NRC, which was published on August 31, has excluded around 19 lakh people.
