As the Assam government failed to control the rising prices of onion, Assam BJP MLA Shiladitya Dev had to return empty-handed from a market in Guwahati.
Searching onion at Rs. 65 per kg, the MLA went to Ulubari Bazar on Sunday morning. But to his disappointment, the sellers have not agreed to provide him onion at less than Rs. 85 per kg.
Accepting the rising prices of onion, MLA Dev said, “It is indeed true that onions are costlier than they used to be. They (sellers) are selling it at around Rs. 85 per kg in this market.” Later, the MLA went to another market in search of cheaper onions.
However, the BJP MLA maintained that the prices of onion have gone up due to supply shortage and not due to the involvement of middle-men.
It may be mentioned here that recently another BJP MLA Prasanta Phukan had said that Onions are sold at Rs. 65 per kg in different Guwahati markets; which drew sharp criticism from the people in the city.
