Guwahati likely to host ASEAN football championship

Guwahati could be hosting the ASEAN Football Championship soon, revealed Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday. Speaking at a function held at Srimanta Sankardeva International Auditorium, Mr. Sonowal also informed that talks are on with the Centre to facilitate the scope of hosting the multinational event in Guwahati. He also said that the event will be another step of the State government's attempt to declare Guwahati as the Sports Capital of the country.

CM was attending the event as a part of the Chief Minister Samagra Gramya Unnayan Yojana (CMGUY) where he also disbursed initial payment of Rs 8 lakh each to 371 rural playground to transform them into modern playgrounds. The first phase of the scheme plans to cover 500 grounds which will receive 40% of the total of 20 lakhs rupees to be given to each ground.

The country's footballing hotbeds in Northeast India have rose to the occasion yet again and is making headlines. In the Khelo India Youth Games 2019, Mizoram and Manipur have proved their mettle once again when it comes to football event. The young talents from the frontier states of the nation have managed to bag the top honours in age-category football championship in the premier youth sports tournament of India.

In the U-21 Boys final, Mizoram beat Kerala 4-3 in penalty shootouts to bag the Gold medal. The U-21 Girls final had a similar fate where the match had to be decided on penalty shootouts. Manipur Girls went one better off their counterparts from Tamil Nadu to win 4-3. Meanwhile Mizoram girls finished in third place after beating Maharashtra by 3-0. In the U-17 Girls football event, Manipur managed to hold on to the third position with a comfortable 2-0 win over Kerala.

The Khelo India Youth Games (previously known as the Khelo India School Games) is the second edition of the event. It is a multi disciplinary sports event held in two age-category at a national level, U-17(school level) and U-21(college level) to identify and nurture youth talents from the grassroots. The Government of India plans to provide scholarship of 5 lakhs INR each to 1000 best talents in the country for a period of 8 years to prepare for future events.
