Three-Tier Panchayat Polls Underway in Tripura
The voting for the three-tier Panchayat polls in Tripura began from 7 am on Saturday and polling has taken place only in 14 percent of seats as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won the rest of the seats unopposed.
The BJP has won 5,728 seats unopposed out of 6,111 seats in Gram Panchayats besides 337 of the 419 seats in 35 Panchayat Samitis and 37 of the 116 seats in Zilla Parishads.
According to reports, paper ballots will be used in the Panchayat election.
However, polling is going on peacefully till the filing of this report.
Moreover, the opposition Congress and CPI (M) alleged that the ruling BJP has applied terror tactics to prevent them from fielding candidates mostly in areas where they succeeded in securing a decent vote share in the last Lok Sabha elections.
The panchayat election is taking place in the areas beyond the jurisdiction of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council which has its own local-level set-up called Village Council that will go to polls next year.
The counting of votes of panchayat polls will take place on July 31.
