Tripura: Section 144 Imposed at Dharmanagar Over Vandalisation of Mosque

Section 144 has been imposed in Tripura's Dharmanagar district, a day after a mosque was allegedly vandalised during a rally taken out by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to protest against violence against Hindus in Bangladesh.

Section 144 has been imposed by the state government till further notice. According to locals, miscreants vandalised a mosque and several shops at Chamtila area in north Tripura district on Tuesday evening.

Central paramilitary forces along with state police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel have also been deployed in the area.

"The situation is in control now. Last night, we spoke to leaders of both communities and with their help we have been able to bring the situation under control," said Bhanupada Chakraborty, district superintendent of police.

The Tripura Police in a tweet said, "North Tripura District Police is taking lawful action in connection with the incident that happened today. The situation is under control. Some people are spreading rumours and circulating provocative messages on social media. It is an appeal to all not to believe such messages and maintain peace."

Lawful action will be initiated against those who are circulating rumours on social media platforms and are trying to disturb peaceful environment, the police added.
