UN and World Bank to support Bangladesh in Rohingya crisis

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, during his meeting with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has said that the UN will put more pressure on Myanmar regarding the Rohingya issue.

“We’re keeping up pressure on Myanmar; we need to put more pressure on Myanmar to make them understand what they should do over this issue” Guterres said.

Meanwhile, World Bank President Jim Yong Kim has assured financial support to Bangladesh regarding the refugee crisis in a meeting with Finance Minister AMA Muhith at the Secretariat in Dhaka on Monday.

The World Bank has reportedly given Bangladesh a lending of over $3 billion to tackle the crisis.

It may be mentioned here that Rohingyas are a Muslim minority ethnic group in Myanmar and are considered as illegal immigrants. They started entering Bangladesh in 1977 and as of today, Bangladesh has given shelter to over 1.1 million Rohingyas on humanitarian grounds.
