Modi Government A Junior Ally of US: CPI (M)

Pratidin Bureau

The editorial of The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) journal 'People' Democracy' stated that the new Modi government will remain a junior ally of the US and India's national interests will be subordinated to that of Washington.

"All indications are that the second term of the Modi government will mark a further reinforcement of its role as a junior partner of the US. This will, in turn, quicken the implementation of the neo-liberal agenda and the consequent adverse impact on the lives of the people," the editorial added.

It further said that in 2014-19, the Modi government took substantial steps to further interlink India strategically and militarily with the US.

"This strategic embrace led to a foreign policy fully in alignment with the US' geo-political interests in the Asia-Pacific region," the editorial stated.

"India bowed to US requests to stop buying oil from Iran and Venezuela and stepped up buying US arms and equipment, displacing the traditional supplier Russia in the top spot," it added.

CPI (M) also accused the Narendra Modi government of undertaking various measures to help US multinational corporations and financial interests.
