Understanding Muharram

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and one of the four most sacred months in Islam. The word “Muharram” means “forbidden,” referring to the prohibition of warfare and conflict during this spiritually significant period.

Rather than celebratory events, the focus of Muharram is on spiritual introspection, particularly on the 10th day—known as Ashura—which commemorates one of the most tragic and pivotal events in Islamic history: the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE.

Ashura: A Day of Mourning and Message

Ashura is deeply revered, especially by Shia Muslims, as a day of profound grief and honor. Imam Hussain refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid ibn Muawiya, an unjust ruler, and was ultimately martyred along with his companions in Karbala (modern-day Iraq).

His sacrifice is seen as a symbol of resistance against oppression and a testament to the Islamic values of truth, justice, and courage. To this day, Imam Hussain’s stand continues to inspire millions of believers across the globe.

Traditions and Rituals of Muharram

During Muharram, particularly the first ten days, various mourning rituals are observed:

  • Shia Muslims wear black, avoid celebratory gatherings, and organize majlis (gatherings) to recount the events of Karbala.

  • Processions are held where participants chant lamentations and walk barefoot, especially on Ashura.

  • Fasting is encouraged for all Muslims—especially on the 9th and 10th (or 10th and 11th) days of Muharram—as a means of spiritual purification.

  • Acts of charity, reading the Quran, and offering prayers are performed to seek forgiveness and divine blessings.

The Islamic New Year and Its Historical Roots

The Islamic New Year, also known as Hijri New Year, began with a major event in 622 CE when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions migrated from Mecca to Medina—an event known as the Hijra. This migration marked the foundation of the first Muslim community (Ummah) and is the point from which the Islamic calendar starts.

Hence, Muharram not only brings spiritual reflection but also a sense of historical continuity, representing renewal, harmony, and the commitment to justice.

Muharram 2025 in India and Worldwide

In India, Muharram 2025 is anticipated to begin on June 27, following the crescent moon sighting. In countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, the new Islamic year may begin a day earlier, on June 26, based on local lunar observations. Notably, the UAE has declared a public holiday on June 27 to observe this solemn occasion.

Across countries like Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, and India, streets are decorated with flags and banners as people gather for days of remembrance. From Baghdad's Sadr City to Delhi's Karbala grounds, Ashura processions attract thousands.

Messages and Wishes for the Islamic New Year

Although Shia Muslims observe this month in mourning, Sunni Muslims often mark the beginning of the Islamic year with solemn greetings and prayers. Some meaningful messages include:

  • “May the dawn of this new Islamic year inspire you to grow in faith and kindness.”

  • “As the crescent moon heralds the arrival of the new year, may Allah bless you with peace, prosperity, and unwavering faith.”

  • “Let this sacred month of Muharram remind us to walk the path of righteousness and grace.”

Muharram 2025 is not just the beginning of a new calendar year in Islam—it is a time that calls for inner reflection, spiritual growth, and remembrance of sacrifice. The lessons from Karbala continue to guide believers in standing up for what is just, even in the face of overwhelming odds.
