A long-cherished dream of the people of Nijarapar and admirers of Dr Bhupen Hazarika came true as the much-awaited Sudhakantha Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Memorial Park was officially inaugurated on Monday evening in Guwahati’s Chandmari locality.
The park, located near the legendary musician’s residence at Nijarapar, was inaugurated by Assam Cabinet Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, in a ceremony graced by several prominent dignitaries.
“This park is not just a tribute; it is a public space that reflects the soul of Assam,” said Minister Mallabaruah, who later took to social media platform X to express his sentiments. “Dr. Bhupen Hazarika is not just a name — he is the identity and the emotion of the Assamese people. This newly developed park fulfils a long-standing need of the residents in this densely populated area.”

As part of the inauguration, a majestic 20-foot-high statue of Sudhakantha was unveiled — becoming the focal point of the memorial and offering the public a place of homage and inspiration.
Developed at a cost of Rs 2.05 crore, the memorial park is designed to serve as both a cultural landmark and a much-needed green space for the residents of Guwahati. The space is envisioned as a confluence of memory, music, and modern civic utility — preserving the legacy of Assam’s most beloved cultural icon.
The inaugural event saw the presence of several distinguished guests including Guwahati East MLA Siddhartha Bhattacharya, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Mayor Mrigen Sarania, GMDA Chairman Narayan Deka, and Dr. Hazarika’s brother, Samar Hazarika, among others.
The newly opened park is expected to become a prominent cultural and recreational hub in the heart of Guwahati, allowing citizens, music lovers, and tourists alike to engage with the legacy of the 'Bard of the Brahmaputra' in a serene and respectful environment.
