Doctor Assaults Staff Over Salary Dispute at Guwahati Clinic; Expired Medicines Alleged
A disturbing incident of workplace violence and alleged medical malpractice has surfaced from a private clinic in Guwahati’s Japorigog locality, raising serious concerns over the functioning of unregulated urban healthcare centres in Assam.
The episode occurred at S.A. Research Diagnostic & Cure Centre, where a female staff member was allegedly assaulted by a doctor after she approached him regarding her pending salary.
The accused, identified as Dr S.A. Ahmed, reportedly attacked the woman without provocation, according to a formal complaint filed by the victim at the Dispur Police Station. The staff member, who has worked at the clinic for several months, claimed that the situation turned violent when she requested her due wages, prompting her to seek legal action.
"I had only asked for the salary I was rightfully owed. Instead, I was met with aggression and physical assault," the complainant stated in her FIR.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, serious allegations of unethical medical practices have also emerged against the clinic. Locals and former patients have accused the facility of distributing expired medicines, endangering the lives of patients under its care.
While police have begun preliminary investigations, no official arrest had been made at the time of reporting. Authorities have confirmed receipt of the complaint and stated that the matter is under active review.
Growing Concerns Over Private Healthcare
This incident has once again spotlighted the lack of regulatory oversight in private healthcare centres across Guwahati, where issues of staff exploitation, unsafe treatment practices, and violation of patient rights have increasingly come to light.
Activists and medical professionals have called for a comprehensive audit of private clinics operating in the city, urging the health department to take swift and strict action against violators to restore public trust in the medical system.
Meanwhile, the victim has demanded justice and a thorough probe into both the assault and the clinic’s operational standards. "If this is how medical institutions treat their own staff, one can only imagine the risks faced by patients," she said.
