An Army official from Arunachal Pradesh, Ponung Doming has created history by holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army as the first woman officer.
She waselevated from the post of Army Major on Monday.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu took to Twitter to share the proud moment.
In Augustthis year, Indian Air Force Wing Commander Shaliza Dhami has become the firstfemale officer in the country to become the Flight Commander of a flying unit.
Flight Commanderis the second in the command of the unit.
Dhami, whohas been serving the air force for 15 years, has been flying choppers. She becamethe first woman flying instructor of the air force and is also the first womanofficer to get permanent commission of the flying branch.
However,women recruited in the armed forces are only in the officers' rank.
According toreport, the army has 3.80 percent of women officers, the navy has six percentand the air force has the highest 13 percent.
