Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday alleged that over 5,000 foreign-based social media accounts, largely operated from Islamic countries, have become unusually active in favour of the Assam Congress, raising what he termed as a potential "national security concern."

Addressing a press conference in Dispur, the Chief Minister said these accounts have originated from 47 countries, with the highest concentration in Bangladesh and Pakistan, and are focused almost exclusively on promoting the activities of one particular Assam Congress leader and the party’s state unit.

"They don’t engage with posts by Rahul Gandhi or even the official pages of the Indian National Congress. Their attention is narrowly concentrated on one Assam Congress leader and the party’s state wing," Sarma stated, without directly naming the leader.

However, his comments are widely believed to refer to Gaurav Gogoi, who was appointed President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) in late May.

Sarma further claimed that these accounts are not merely political cheerleaders but are also involved in spreading Islamic fundamentalist content, including pro-Palestine narratives, support for Iran, and posts in favour of Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Prof Md Yunus.

"This is the first time we are seeing such a large-scale foreign digital engagement in Assam’s political scene—particularly in the run-up to the 2026 Assembly Elections," the Chief Minister warned.

Central Government Alerted, Says CM

Terming the issue "serious," Sarma confirmed that the central government has been informed, with the matter flagged as one concerning national security and electoral integrity.

"The extent of coordinated digital activity, with a geopolitical and religious slant, aimed at influencing Assam’s internal politics, is deeply alarming," he said, hinting at possible cyber or intelligence-level probes.
