Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that two more individuals have been arrested from different districts of the state for allegedly posting content deemed "anti-Hindu" in nature, taking the total number of arrests in the ongoing crackdown to 97.
In a post on social media platform 'X' on Monday, CM Sarma informed that one person each had been apprehended from Tinsukia and Nagaon districts. According to the Chief Minister, the individual from Tinsukia identified as Anisur Rehman had allegedly shared objectionable content targeting Hinduism on social media platforms. Meanwhile, the accused from Nagaon named Farijul Islam was arrested for making a derogatory remark about Lord Ram.
He wrote, "Crackdown on Anti-Hindu elements continues 🚨1️⃣@TinsukiaPolice arrested Md Anisur Rehman for sharing an objectionable content on Hinduism. 2️⃣ @nagaonpolice arrested Farijul Islam for a derogatory comment on Lord Ram. 97 anti-national and anti-Hindu culprits behind bars now."
This comes amid heightened political and social tensions following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, south Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 people, most of them tourists, and left several others injured.
Earlier, opposition All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) legislator Aminul Islam was arrested under sedition charges after he allegedly made statements defending Pakistan and its suspected role in the Pahalgam attack. Though Islam was granted bail in the case, he was subsequently booked under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) and detained again.
