Akhil Gogoi Blames Govt for Eviction-Linked Suicide, Demands ₹1 Crore Compensation
Raijor Dal president and Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi launched a scathing attack on the Assam government on Saturday, holding it responsible for the death of a man in Goalpara, identified as Faizul Haque who allegedly died by suicide out of fear of an impending eviction. Gogoi termed the incident a “shameful consequence” of what he described as a “Hitler-like regime” being imposed in the name of development.
“This tragic incident exposes how the state’s aggressive eviction policy is pushing vulnerable people into despair. A person has taken his own life simply out of fear. The Chief Minister must take moral responsibility and learn from this,” Gogoi said during a press briefing.
Demanding justice for the deceased, Gogoi called for a compensation of ₹1 crore to be paid to the victim’s family.
He alleged that the eviction drives currently being carried out across Assam are part of a larger agenda to hand over land to industrialists and religious figures.
“This inhuman eviction is not about land management. It's about handing over Assam’s soil to people like Ramdev, Adani, and Ambani. The government is targeting poor Muslims under the pretext of eviction to polarise voters and appease the Hindu electorate,” Gogoi alleged.
He further claimed that in areas like Dhubri and Lakhimpur, many of those being evicted had earlier been certified as indigenous citizens by the state itself.
“In Dhubri, the same BJP government had issued indigenous certificates to those being evicted today. In Lakhimpur, the people being targeted are poor, indigenous Muslims,” he added.
Accusing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of using evictions to further his personal political ambitions, Gogoi said:
“By giving land to Adani and Ambani, the Chief Minister is trying to strengthen his own career and position himself as a national-level leader and corporate favourite.”
Sharp Remarks on Congress and Alliance Politics
Akhil Gogoi also responded to recent remarks by Congress Legislature Party leader Debabrata Saikia regarding Sivasagar. Rebuffing suggestions of alliance necessity, Gogoi said he does not need political partnerships to retain his seat.
“I don’t need any alliance to win in Sivasagar. In 2021, BJP and Congress both campaigned aggressively, but I won because of the people’s affection and independent judgement,” he said. “Many voters supported me without even meeting me in person.”
He urged the Congress to make its stance clear regarding alliance politics in Assam.
“Congress has always been ambiguous about forming alliances. Debabrata Saikia must publicly clarify his recent remarks, and the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee should also spell out its official position. I expect Saikia to issue a clarification today itself,” Gogoi said.
Raijor Dal Gears Up for 2026
Reaffirming Raijor Dal’s commitment to opposition unity, Gogoi said:
“We were part of the opposition alliance, we are still part of it, and we will remain so. All forces must unite to defeat the BJP.”
Gogoi projected a confident outlook for the 2026 Assembly elections, claiming that Raijor Dal is poised to expand its presence in the state legislature.
“We have nothing to lose. Our seats will increase—we will definitely enter double digits in 2026. I will contest again from Sivasagar,” he stated.
Addressing speculation around seat-sharing and alliances, Gogoi maintained a flexible tone:
“I have no personal stake in any particular seat. We are willing to sit across the table, have discussions, and decide candidates based on winnability.”
He declined to make personal remarks about Congress leader Debabrata Saikia but reiterated the need for clarity from the party on the issue of alliance.
