The Assam Cabinet on Sunday approved the ‘Shraddhanjali’ scheme, a state-funded initiative to bring back the mortal remains of Assamese youth who die while working or studying outside the state.

Addressing a press meet after the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the policy was born out of a humanitarian need.

“We all know that many youths from Assam are working in other states, often for low wages. If, unfortunately, they die due to any reason, bringing their bodies home becomes an insurmountable task for their families. That’s why we have brought in a scheme called ‘Shraddhanjali,’ which the cabinet approved today,” the Chief Minister said.

Under the Shraddhanjali scheme, the Assam government will bear all expenses to repatriate the bodies of residents who travel outside the state for employment or education purposes and pass away during their stay.

“These sons and daughters of Assam leave home in search of a better future. If fate snatches them away, the least we can do is bring them back with dignity and honour,” Sarma added.

Not for Medical Travelers

However, the CM clarified that this benefit would not apply to individuals who travel to other states for medical treatment and pass away during the course of their treatment. The scheme is exclusively for those who go out to work or study.

The Assam Police Special Branch will be entrusted with implementing and monitoring the scheme. In the event of a death, families can call the emergency number 112, and the Special Branch will immediately begin the process.

“Once the family contacts 112, the Special Branch will verify details, and a DIG-level officer will take charge to ensure the body is brought back to Assam with full respect and honour,” the Chief Minister informed.

Interestingly, even before formal approval, the state had already brought back nearly 15 bodies this year under this compassionate framework, though without an official policy in place.

“Now, with cabinet approval, the process will be streamlined, systematic, and guaranteed,” Sarma said.
