The controversy stems from a recent video statement and subsequent remarks by Mira Borthakur, who accused Riniki Bhuyan Sharma of collecting money in the name of the Mahamrityunjaya Mandir in Nagaon and Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati.

Borthakur alleged that the fundraising was conducted without any official authorization, raising questions over transparency and intent.

Reacting strongly, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma dismissed the accusations as false, offensive, and politically motivated.

“Such kind of statement by a woman is a very offensive statement against me being a woman,” she said in a video statement. “They keep on saying such things for political mileage. I have nothing to say about that, but the language she used and the allegation she made is very derogatory.”

She further emphasized that such remarks are unacceptable in Assamese society, and announced that she has moved the court to seek redressal.

“If they claim I’ve done such a thing, then come and prove it before the court,” she said defiantly. “She [Mira Borthakur] will have to appear before the court on July 18. I will keep fighting for this until justice is served.”

Political Temperatures Rising

The incident is likely to spark a political row in Assam, especially as it involves high-profile public figures and sensitive religious matters. While the Congress party has yet to officially respond, insiders suggest the legal move has triggered discussions at senior levels.

As the case heads to court, all eyes will now be on July 18—the date set for Mira Borthakur to appear in court and respond to the charges.
