Relentless rainfall over the past several days has triggered a devastating flood in Assam’s Jonai, with the Dikhari River breaching its banks and submerging over 20 villages. The rising waters have inundated homes, roads, agricultural fields, and grazing lands, leaving hundreds of families stranded and livestock facing a severe food shortage.
According to reports, villages under Ramdhan Dikhari Gaon Panchayat, including Jamuguri 1, 2, 3 and Uluwani 1, 2, Lanka, are among the worst affected. Torrential rain in both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh has caused water levels in the Dikhari River to swell dangerously, flooding low-lying areas and cutting off access to several villages.
Entire farmlands have been submerged, causing massive damage to crops, which are the primary source of livelihood for residents in the region. The floodwaters have also led to a shortage of fodder for cattle, raising concerns of animal starvation and disease outbreaks.
In a further blow to the already dire situation, the only access road to the affected areas has been completely submerged. As a result, locals are forced to rely solely on makeshift country boats (Tulunga Naus) for transportation and relief efforts.
Despite the worsening conditions, many residents allege that no assistance or inquiry has been made by the Jonai Subdivision administration or relevant departmental authorities. With entire communities waterlogged, residents are demanding urgent action and support to address the humanitarian crisis unfolding before their eyes.
