Assam’s Village Genius: Mechanic Builds Water-Car Without Govt Support
In a remarkable feat of innovation and determination, a young man from a remote village in Assam’s Sribhumi district has built a water-running four-wheeler entirely on his own — without any formal technical education, government job, or assistance from public welfare schemes.
The innovator, Madan Roy, popularly known as Abhi, hails from Baguwa-Notila village under the Badarpur area. He is the owner of a small roadside workshop named Janata Tata Maruti Workshop, which serves as the sole source of income for his family.
According to locals, Abhi designed and built the amphibious vehicle in just one month, working with limited tools and salvaged materials. The vehicle, which is capable of moving on water instead of traditional roadways, has drawn widespread attention on social media platforms, where videos of it navigating through a local waterbody have gone viral.
What makes this achievement even more extraordinary is that Abhi has no formal training in mechanics or engineering. He developed the vehicle through his own experience, curiosity, and a relentless spirit of experimentation. In the past, he has also built several functional devices using electronic scrap and spare parts collected over time.
“I’ve never received any government scheme or assistance—not even the unemployment support that many others have benefitted from. I built this using my own savings, earned from repairing vehicles in my garage,” Abhi told reporters.
Despite his contribution to grassroots innovation, Abhi says he continues to be overlooked by the system. His appeal to the government is simple — recognition and support for youth like him, who strive to build solutions despite limited resources and support structures.
Local residents have praised Abhi’s efforts, calling him an inspiration for unemployed and underprivileged youth across Assam. Many believe that with proper backing, he could contribute significantly to low-cost innovation in rural mobility and technology.
As his amphibious vehicle continues to make waves online, the spotlight is now on whether authorities will take notice of his exceptional talent — and provide the platform and support he needs to take his ideas further.
