The Oil India Limited (OIL) has asked the Assam Government to stop ongoing protest against the PSU in Upper Assam after the Baghjan incident as it has seriously hampered the Power generation, tea garden and Assam Gas cracker which are directly dependent on its feedstock.

Meanwhile it has set July 14 as the final date to extinguish the fire of Baghjan and cap the well. They have also accepted the Rs 30 lakh per  house demand of the 16 families which houses were completely damaged for the fire.

Meanwhile In a letter to the Government of Assam through the District Magistrate of Tinsukia, the OIL asserted that they had paid one time compensation of Rs 9 crores to the 1390 families through the State Government awaiting the outcome of the committee set up by the National Green Tribunal.

The OIL in the toughly worded letter said that they were producing now 8200 MT per day against the normal 9500 MT per day seriously affecting the feedstock to the power generation, tea factories besides the gas cracker.

Following Baghjan, there has been intermittent protest against the OIL in all its production areas as they are blamed for intentional negligence towards safety measures.

There is also stalemate regarding the compensation to the 16 houses which were completely damaged by the Baghjan fire and for that there were strong protests from the people of Baghjan also.

They were demanding Rs 50 lakh per house and it was eventually settled a Rs 30 lakh after lot of negotiation. The OIL also gives written assurance that once the NGT appointed committee finalize the compensation they would immediately pay.

So far 3000 families have been paid Rs 30,000 one time compensation with a total cost of Rs 9 crore.
