In a rare show of defiance, thousands of BJP workers, joined by aggrieved parents, guardians of students, and unpaid contractors, staged a sit-in demonstration in front of the District Commissioner's office in Assam's Dima Hasao district on Monday.
The protest saw symbolic participation with protesters carrying plates of rice (thalis), a gesture reflecting the struggle for basic livelihood entitlements.
The demonstrators, who came from across various constituencies of the district, demanded the immediate resignation of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Debolal Gorlosa. Further, the protesting BJP workers issued an ultimatum, warning that they would resign from the party en masse if Gorlosa is not removed from his post before July 15.
Key demands raised during the protest include the long-pending release of contract bill payments, provision of scholarships to students from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, and the timely implementation of welfare schemes promised by the state government, and to stop favouritism in scheme distribution.
Protesters accused CEM Debolal Gorlosa of running an autocratic administration, marked by favoritism and the denial of benefits to genuine beneficiaries. Many claimed that only a select few have been able to access development funds, while deserving groups remain neglected.
