Burha Police atrocity case turns to “Love-Jihad”
Updated on

Even as the Assam Police have launched a damage control investigationto the stripped-torture case, the fringe elements are trying to give it acommunal colour through the Love Jihad Angle.

This afternoon, the Assam Police DIG (CWR) Brojenjit Sinha have started an investigation and personally interrogated all the accused while NHRC slapped case against two Assam Police officials who were accused of beating three women in a police station.

A case has been filed on Tuesday against an Assam policeofficer and a constable for allegedly torturing a pregnant woman and hersisters inside a police station in the state's Darrang district.

Reports said that the two police personnel, Mahendra Sarmaand Binita Boro, had also been suspended after the criminal cases were filedagainst them.

In the meantime, the case has taken a communal turn with love Jihad angle as the brother of the tortured three women was accused of kidnapping Hindu women.

Although initially it was considered as love eloping, now it has turned out to be an alleged kidnapping of a Hindu girl by the Muslim Boy.  The Muslim Boy was already arrested and in jail.

The three women accused the officials of "custodialtorture, including being stripped, kicked and beaten with lathis", afterthey were picked up after a case was registered against their brother for allegedlykidnapping a Hindu woman.

The sisters, aged 28, 30 and 18, had written a"detailed" account of the incident in a complaint to police sayingSarma and Boro "stripped us naked, assaulted us and touched our privateparts".

On the day they were picked up, the assault only stopped theafter their brother, who was reportedly in Meghalaya's Shillong with the womanhe had allegedly kidnapped, surrendered at the police outpost. The women toldreporters that the two were involved in an affair and there was no instance ofkidnapping.

"He arrived with the girl at 6.30 am at the outpost. Heasked them why we were tortured for a case against him. They beat him too. Webelieve the two of them (her brother and the woman) were involved in afull-fledged affair," one of the sisters was quoted as saying by the media.

However this has been contested by the girl family and noweven the girl has also been talking in that line, giving the Love-Jihad angle astrong impetus.

According to Amrit Bhuyan, Darrang superintendent of police was quoted as saying that the family of the Hindu woman had filed a case of kidnapping against the brother. Reportedly, the police also claimed that the woman told them she had been taken "forcibly".
