The All Guwahati Cab Drivers' Association hasannounced to stage protest against the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act, 2019implemented in Guwahati from September 24.
The association will submit a memorandum to the transport commissioner as well as the deputy commissioner demanding the reduction of the amount of fines which was implemented as per the Act.
The President of All Assam Cab Owners' Association, Ismail Ali said that they cannot accept such a law. He said, "With the introduction of the Motor Vehicle Act, fines have been hiked for riding an uninsured vehicle. The drivers might have outdated vehicle documents due to some genuine reasons too and therefore, we cannot accept such a law. It is harassment for the common man in the name of enacting legislation."
He said that the government is looting us on thepretext of providing security and safety to the people. The government isgenerating revenue through the exorbitant penalties imposed for trafficviolations.
Ali further stated that since states have the power to reduce the penalties for different offenses, we would like to request the authorities to slash the fines like in Gujarat.
He stated that they will assemble in front of theDistrict Transport Office on October 1 and submit a memorandum to the TransportCommissioner to withdraw the legislation and look into the welfare schemes ofthe drivers' union.
