Reacting on Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement of bringing the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) on Tuesday at Kolkata, the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has warned Shah and asked him to refrain from playing with the sentiments of the people of Assam and other states of Northeast.
AASU GeneralSecretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Wednesday said that the students' body would beforced to launch a democratic movement if the Centre tries to impose the Billagainst the wishes of the people.
He said thatAASU would never accept the violation of the Assam Accord.
According tothe clauses of Assam Accord, all foreigners who came to Assam after March 24,1971 should be detected and deported irrespective of religion and that AASUwould not allow to violate the rules.
Gogoi furtherstated that the Centre's move to try and give citizenship to foreigners on thebasis of religion is unconstitutional as India is a secular country.
Gogoi saidthat the imposition of CAB would pose a threat to the political rights,language and culture of the indigenous people of the state along with the restof the Northeastern region.
