In a pointed statement aimed at the Congress leadership in Assam, Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi on Monday accused the party of lacking seriousness in forging an opposition alliance to take on the ruling BJP in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Speaking to reporters, Gogoi made it clear that since Gaurav Gogoi took over as president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Raijor Dal has refrained from criticising Congress even once. He said this restraint was a conscious political decision made in the hope of building a united anti-BJP front.
“Not just Raijor Dal, the entire population of Assam is waiting for Congress to take the lead in building a coalition. Every regional party, every democratic voice in Assam is waiting for unity to save the state from the oppressive rule of Himanta Biswa Sarma,” Gogoi said.
Referring to recent remarks made by Gaurav Gogoi, Akhil Gogoi expressed disappointment, claiming that Gogoi’s statement suggests Congress may still be contemplating going solo in the upcoming elections. “If that is truly Congress's stand, it is deeply unfortunate for the people of Assam who are desperate to dethrone this tyrannical regime,” he said.
Gogoi stressed that Assam is yearning for a democratic revival, and the only way to achieve it is through an inclusive alliance. “We have not spoken a single word against the Congress since Gaurav became president. We’ve shown patience, because we are waiting for one word—‘coalition’—to come from Gaurav Gogoi himself,” he said.
He added that millions of people across Assam are praying for opposition unity to end the BJP’s dominance and restore democratic governance. “We believe Gaurav is focused on strengthening his party, and we respect that. But if Congress believes it can fight the BJP alone, it is a betrayal of public sentiment,” Gogoi warned.
Calling on the Congress to abandon political ego and rise to the occasion, Gogoi reiterated that Raijor Dal is ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with all democratic forces. “We are doing everything we can to bring the opposition together. The people of Assam are watching. Time is running out.”
