Massive riverbank erosion triggered by the Brahmaputra River has struck alarmingly close to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat at Maijan in Dibrugarh, with large tracts of land vanishing into the river since early morning on Tuesday.

The river, flowing with an unusually powerful current, is eroding the embankment at a rapid pace—swallowing land chunk by chunk. Within hours, the river has consumed significant portions of the bank, creating panic among residents of nearby riverside settlements. Visuals from the ground show soil caving in dramatically, with parts of the embankment collapsing into the waters.

Fear has gripped the local population, as many anticipate the imminent loss of their homes and property. Several families residing in the low-lying areas have already begun evacuating their belongings, worried that their houses could be next. “We’ve never seen the river this aggressive. The land is disappearing before our eyes,” said a distressed resident.

The erosion has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of government-sponsored anti-erosion projects in the region. Despite crores of rupees being spent over the years to fortify the Brahmaputra’s banks in Dibrugarh, such incidents continue to recur, especially during the monsoon season.

Local residents have called for immediate intervention by the district administration and the Water Resources Department to contain the erosion and safeguard vulnerable families. Many are also demanding a comprehensive review of the quality and sustainability of existing embankment works in the area.

As of now, there are no reports of casualties or injuries, but the damage to land and property is expected to be substantial if the erosion continues unchecked.
