The Foreigners' Tribunal No. 1 of Bongaigaon had declared Bharati Sarkar a bonafide Indian citizen in March 2019 however the Tribunal has asked to prove her legal status once again.
As per reports, two cases have been registered against the Sarkar who is a resident of Jamdoha village under Manikpur police station of Bongaigaon. The Tribunal served a notice on September 30 to appear before it on November 16 and submit evidence proving her Indian citizenship.
Sarkar had proved her citizenship back in March 2019. The Foreigners' Tribunal disposed of the case which was originally lodged in 2002 by Bongaigaon SP (border), and the second one dates back to 2004 and both were referred to the Tribunal in 2010.
The woman in her sixties submitted her documents with evidentiary value. A police officer informed a media outlet that there "could have been some lapse due to which the two cases were registered and forwarded to the tribunal separately. The local police have been in contact with Sarkar and they are helping her submit the papers. On Monday, the process will be initiated".
