In a major development concerning the long-standing Assam-Nagaland border issue, high-level officials from both states convened at the Circuit House in Golaghat district's Sarupathar to deliberate on the upcoming eviction drive in Uriamghat.

The inter-state meeting witnessed the presence of Golaghat Deputy Commissioner Pulak Mahanta; Superintendent of Police of Golaghat Rajen Singh; high-ranking officials from Nagaland's Usha and Niuland; border Additional Deputy Commissioners from both states; magistrates overseeing the border region; senior CRPF officers, and forest department officials.

Reportedly, an eviction drive is scheduled to be launched in Uriamghat within the next week. The initiative comes after the Assam Forest Department served notices to individuals allegedly encroaching upon the Rengma Reserve Forest. The notices direct all illegal occupants to vacate the forest land within seven days.

In a related development, local support for the eviction drive is gaining momentum in Uriamghat. The indigenous Muslim community of Sarupathar has expressed strong backing for the state’s action. The Padumoni Mosque Committee in Sarupathar has taken a decisive step by issuing a directive banning the entry of any evicted individuals or unknown outsiders into the village.

The mosque committee has urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity in the area. As a preventive measure, a “No Entry” banner has been placed at the village entrance. The committee has strictly warned that no evicted individual or unidentified outsider will be allowed to enter the village under any circumstances. Any violation of this directive, they stated, will lead to immediate legal action.

This grassroots support from local communities adds a significant dimension to the unfolding situation, as the Assam government appears poised to carry out a forceful eviction to reclaim forest land and assert control along the sensitive inter-state border region.
