Beef-Eating Congress Leaders Can’t Protest Over Gir Cows: Assam CM

Protests erupted across Assam on Monday as Congress workers launched statewide demonstrations over the alleged illegal sale of Gir cows to local legislators and ministers — a controversy that has triggered intense political debate over recent weeks. The flashpoint was Golaghat, where Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was scheduled to inaugurate a new indoor stadium at the GDSA Complex, situated close to the district Congress office.

Anticipating the CM's arrival, Congress supporters gathered in large numbers, waving black flags and holding placards that demanded accountability and a formal inquiry into what they termed the "Goru Sur" (cow thief). Tensions ran high as protesters accused the BJP-led government of shielding powerful individuals connected to the scandal, while simultaneously cracking down on public dissent.

CM’s Fiery Response: ‘Congress Has No Moral Right’

In a scathing rebuttal, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma dismissed the protests, stating that Congress leaders have “no moral right” to raise the issue of Gir cows. He said, “Congress leaders who consume beef have no moral ground to protest about Gir cows. If they truly care about cow protection, let them join me in pledging to stop cow slaughter from the next Eid onwards. Do they have the courage?”

He further alleged that Congress leaders like Rakibul Hussain, Rekibuddin Ahmed, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, and Nurul Huda were known to consume beef, and claimed that nearly 1,400 cows were slaughtered in Dhubri town during the last Bakri Eid. “We protect cows even when they are on their deathbed, but Congress offers them in Kurbani,” the CM remarked.

He also alleged that cow meat was found stored in Namghars (traditional Vaishnavite prayer halls), adding, “Now we are carrying out evictions at those places.”

Bottle Thrown at CM’s Convoy During Golaghat Protest

During the Golaghat protest, the situation escalated when a bottle was hurled at the Chief Minister’s vehicle. Reacting to the incident, CM Sarma said with sarcasm, “When else will Congress protest if not in front of a BJP leader? If 12-13 boys don’t object to me here, how will they answer their leaders in Guwahati? I appreciate their efforts. There is nothing to feel bad about. Even better if the bottle had hit me.”

Congress Protesters Detained

Amid the chaos, police detained four Congress workers in Golaghat — Rupanta Tanti, Parthasarathi Bora, Rahul Saikia, and Trishna Chutiya. They were accused of obstructing the CM’s visit and participating in the black flag demonstration.

Statewide Unrest and Demands for Inquiry

Beyond Golaghat, similar protests were staged in Lakhimpur, Nagaon, and Guwahati, with Congress workers demanding transparency and legal action. A senior Congress leader at one of the protest sites remarked, “The Gir cow scam has rocked the state. Ministers and MLAs are allegedly involved. Where is the investigation?”

Another protester voiced concerns over what they described as increasing authoritarianism: “When ‘Roja’ comes, the ‘Proja’ suffer. Is this democracy?”

The Congress party has called for an independent probe into the alleged misappropriation and illegal sale of Gir cows, accusing the state government of misusing administrative machinery to silence critics and protect high-profile offenders.
