The Union government has decidedto completely remove NSG commandos from VIP protection duties, official sourcessaid.

This will be after over twodecades that the 'black cat' commandos of the elite counter-terror force will betaken out from VIP protection duties, a task not originally charted for it whenthe force was conceptualised and raised in 1984.

Officials in the securityestablishment told media that the protection duties of NSG, which includegiving security to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh ChiefMinister Yogi Adityanath, will soon be transferred to paramilitary forces.

The other NSG protectees includeex-CMs Mayawati, Mulayam Singh, Chandrababu Naidu, Parkash Singh Badal andFarooq Abdullah, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, BJP leader and formerDeputy Prime Minister L K Advani.

The National Security Guard (NSG)is a counter terrorism unit under the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). Itwas raised in 15 October 1984, following Operation Blue Star, Akshardham Templeattack and the assassination of Indira Gandhi, "for combating terroristactivities with a view to protect states against internal disturbances".

The force provides proximate andmobile security cover — commandos armed with sophisticated assault weapons —under the top 'Z+' category to 13 'high-risk' VIPs that entails about two dozenpersonnel for each one of them.
