‘Intent to Strike Again’: Assam Police Link Arms Haul to Bokakhat Attack
In a major development in the Bokakhat's Panbari police outpost grenade attack case, Assam Police have arrested a youth from Tezpur who was allegedly involved in the incident. The accused, identified as Bhabesh Kalita of Kachor Chuburi village under Bebejia Police Outpost in Tezpur, had reportedly hidden a live grenade by burying it behind his residence.
Following his arrest, a joint operation was carried out by Sonitpur Police and the Indian Army, leading to the recovery of the grenade. It was later safely defused in an isolated location. Investigators are currently examining the device to determine any similarities with the grenade used in the explosion at the Bokakhat police facility.
Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Harmeet Singh, while addressing the media in Kaziranga, confirmed that two more individuals — Rupjyoti Das and Ankur Das — have been implicated in the case. Rupjyoti Das has been taken into custody, while Ankur Das remains absconding.
In a coordinated series of operations, police also apprehended two more suspects: Bhabesh Kalita from Tezpur and Sanjeev Baruah from Lakhimpur. Both were found in possession of weapons. A grenade and a pistol were recovered from Lakhimpur, while another grenade was seized from Tezpur.
According to DGP Singh, the accused were allegedly in possession of these weapons with the intention of carrying out further similar attacks. He also indicated that around five to six more individuals may be involved in the conspiracy. However, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation, police officials refrained from disclosing further details.
Earlier today, amid rising security concerns, the Chief Minister confirmed that multiple arrests have been made in connection with the Bokakhat grenade blast. He also revealed that a broader conspiracy to trigger explosions in Guwahati, Golaghat, Lakhimpur, and Tezpur has been successfully thwarted.
As part of the ongoing investigation, authorities have recovered three grenades and a pistol.
Those apprehended include a former ULFA militant and an individual suspected to be involved in drug trafficking.
“While the blast in Golaghat did take place, similar attacks in other locations were prevented due to swift and coordinated police action. The investigation is still underway to uncover the masterminds behind the plot,” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated.
