The victim, identified as Rajesh Agarwala, was allegedly targeted by a gang that used coercion and manipulation to extract large sums of money from him since 2022. The network, police said, had recently demanded an additional ₹47 lakh from Agarwala and even attempted to seize control of one of his shops through intimidation.

Following the renewed threats, the businessman finally filed a formal complaint with the Jorhat Police. Acting on his FIR, police have registered a case under Section 308(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched a probe into the extortion racket.

The masterminds behind the operation have been identified as brothers Gajanan Munda and Nand Kishore Munda. Both are currently absconding. Police have issued summons to multiple individuals suspected to be connected with the racket, and efforts are underway to trace the main accused.

As part of the ongoing investigation, police have questioned a youth named Parvez Hussain, whose role in the case is under scrutiny.

In a dramatic development, the name of Riyaz Hussain, the General Secretary of the Jorhat district unit of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), has also surfaced in connection with the case. Sources indicate that his involvement is being seriously looked into. The Jorhat police have issued a notice directing him to appear at Jorhat Sadar Police Station on July 1 for questioning.

While the full extent of the racket is yet to be uncovered, police officials confirmed that the case appears to be part of a larger network operating with the intent to systematically target and extort local businesspersons.

Senior officials from Jorhat Police have remained tight-lipped about further details, citing the sensitivity of the investigation. However, they have assured that no individual, regardless of their political or social position, will be spared if found guilty.
