NRC-Hit Citizens Facing Harassment: AAMSU Urges Governor’s Intervention
A delegation of the All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU) on Tuesday met the Governor of Assam at Raj Bhavan and submitted a memorandum raising serious concerns over what it called “systematic harassment” of religious minorities in the state under the pretext of identifying illegal foreigners.
Led by AAMSU president Rezaul Karim Sarkar, general secretary Minnatul Islam, and senior leader Kuddus Ali Sarkar, the delegation alleged that members of the religious minority communities — including individuals whose names are listed in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and who possess valid legal documents — are being illegally detained and subjected to pushback attempts.
In their memorandum, AAMSU claimed that a number of Indian citizens have become victims of the state’s controversial pushback policy and are being subjected to humiliation and displacement without proper legal procedures. The delegation accused the government of launching arbitrary eviction drives across various parts of the state, disproportionately targeting poor and marginalized minority communities.
“These evictions are not only unjust but inhumane. Many people have been forced to abandon their homes and livelihoods overnight. Some have even resorted to extreme measures under the trauma of displacement,” said AAMSU leaders after meeting the Governor.
AAMSU also slammed Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of politicizing communal sentiments and attempting to polarize voters by vilifying minorities. The student body alleged that the state government is deliberately using religious identity as a political tool to win elections.

Referring to recent remarks made by the Chief Minister on beef consumption and household dietary practices, AAMSU issued a sharp rebuke. “It is not the job of a Chief Minister to inspect what is inside someone’s kitchen. His duty is to focus on governance and development, not on dictating who eats what,” said AAMSU in a statement.
The student body further urged the Governor to intervene and ensure that all actions taken by the state are in line with constitutional values and human rights. “We request the Governor of Assam to take immediate cognizance of the situation and ensure that the fundamental rights of citizens — especially minorities — are protected,” AAMSU stated.
The meeting concluded with AAMSU reiterating its demand for an immediate halt to arbitrary evictions, illegal detentions, and pushback operations until a transparent and lawful process is guaranteed.
