Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi, on Sunday inaugurated senior journalist Mrinal Talukdar's book Post Colonial Assam (1947 to 2019) at an event held in India International Centre (IIC) in New Delhi. Releasing the book, the CJI termed NRC to be the base document for the future.

"This is an occasion to put things in properperspective, NRC, as it may finally emerge, is not a document of the moment. It'snot about 19 lakhs or 40 lakhs. It's a base document for the future," the CJIsaid.

CJI Gogoi hailing NRC said, "There was an urgent needto identify illegal migrants in Assam, which is what the current exercise ofNRC had attempted, nothing more nothing less."

He also criticised those, who raised questions on the NRC process and termed them as "armchair commentators". "Assam people are victims of armchair commentators where due process was questioned and challenges are thrown at the attempt of the democratic process," the CJI maintained.
However, the CJI accepted that there were someproblems in the implementation of the NRC.
