Tributes are pouring in for former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi who passed away on Monday evening at 5:34pm after a prolonged battle with illness.

President Ram Nath Kovind condoled the former CM's demise on twitter and said that "the country has lost a veteran leader with rich political and administrative experience".

"Extremely sad to know of the demise of Shri Tarun Gogoi, former Chief Minister of Assam. The country has lost a veteran leader with rich political and administrative experience. His long tenure in office was a period of epochal change in Assam," he tweeted.

Retweeting his own tweet, the president added that his passing away marks the "end of an era".

"He will always be remembered for the development of Assam and especially towards his efforts to improve law and order and fighting insurgency in the state. His passing away marks the end of an era. In this hour of grief, condolences to his family, friends and supporters."

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also paid his respects to the veteran leader and said he was "a great and wise teacher" to him, adding that he will miss him.

"Shri Tarun Gogoi was a true Congress leader. He devoted his life to bringing all the people and communities of Assam together. For me, he was a great and wise teacher. I loved and respected him deeply. I will miss him. My love and condolences to Gaurav & the family."

The Indian National Congress (INC) tweeted a picture of Tarun Gogoi and paid their tributes to the veteran leader.

"An incredible leader, a Congress stalwart & three-time CM of Assam, Shri Tarun Gogoi's dedication towards the development & unity of his people and his State has inspired many generations of Indians. We pay our heartfelt condolences to his family at this time of grief."

Union Minister Amit Shah also paid tributes to Gogoi and shared his condolences to his family and followers.

PM Modi earlier tweeted on the same and said he is "deeply anguished by Gogoi's passing away".

Furthermore, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said Tarun Gogoi "made notable contribution to Assam's development.
