In a disturbing revelation, senior journalist and Editor-in-Chief of Pratidin Time, Nitumoni Saikia, has publicly disclosed that he received repeated threats and was subjected to mental harassment over the phone. The veteran journalist brought the matter to light through his news discussion programme Abhimat, sparking widespread concern over the safety of media professionals in Assam.
As detailed by Saikia during the broadcast, the intimidation occurred on Sunday night, with him receiving multiple phone calls until around 8 PM. The callers reportedly used abusive language and issued direct threats, attempting to silence him over his editorial stance and critical remarks on recent political developments.
Saikia named several individuals allegedly involved in the harassment. Among them are Nandalal Sarkar, Aditya Baishya, Shopla Rajbongshi Medhi, Kamal Baishya, Karabi, Monika Bharali, Bini Deka Kalita, Aninda Ankur Bibharani Das, Madhab Rajbongshi, Pradip Barman, Bishal Barman, Jayanta Sarma, Sadiqul Islam, Minakshi Lahon Das, Mrigen Sarma, Uttpal Dutta and Kaushik Das. One of the callers, Aditya Baishya, allegedly claimed to be a relative of Assam Cabinet Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah
It is further alleged that a section of BJP leaders and workers from Nalbari, along with some ardent supporters of the minister, were involved in orchestrating this campaign of intimidation.
The issue has since reached Assam BJP State President Dilip Saikia, who has reportedly taken note of the matter following its broadcast on Abhimat.
The incident has drawn condemnation from media circles and civil society, with many calling for a transparent investigation. Press freedom advocates have demanded accountability and urged authorities to ensure the safety of journalists speaking truth to power.
As of now, it is unclear whether a formal police complaint has been lodged, but legal options are reportedly being explored.
