Severe flash floods have wreaked havoc in Assam’s Jonai after the turbulent Rayang River, swollen by incessant rainfall, breached nearly 100 metres of a guide bund on its left bank, sources said.

As per sources, the breach has led to the inundation of more than ten villages and the displacement of hundreds of families.

According to locals, the heavy downpour since the early hours of Saturday triggered a surge in water levels in the Rayang River, which originates in the hills in Arunachal Pradesh. The force of the river burst through the recently built but incomplete guide bund, submerging vast areas of agricultural land, disrupting road connectivity, and inundating homes.

Reports confirm that over a hundred families across these villages are now waterlogged and marooned, with many forced to abandon their homes.

Residents have expressed concern that over a thousand families may suffer heavy agricultural losses due to submerged paddy fields and farmland. There is also growing fear that several homes and school buildings in the low-lying areas may be completely submerged if the water levels continue to rise.

Villagers blamed the disaster on the unfinished construction of the embankment. Though the guide bund was initiated during last year’s monsoon following earlier breaches, the construction remained incomplete, making the area vulnerable to such disasters, they alleged.
