‘Relief Not Enough’ Alleges Flood Victims

‘Relief Not Enough’ Alleges Flood Victims

Even as floodwaters have begun to recede in parts of Assam, the overall flood situation, however, continues to remain grim in several districts of the state as hundreds of villages still remain affected.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority report as on Thursday, the total number of affected people in the State stood at around 53,52,107 in 4,128 villages under 103 revenue circles of 28 districts.

However, the cumulative figure concerning the flood-related death during this flood season shot up to 37.

In the 689 relief camps operational in the affected districts, 2, 25, 737 flood-hit people are still taking shelter.

Altogether 391 relief distribution centres are also operational in the affected areas.

"However, villagers are forced to live in the relief camps as the water is yet to completely recede. With dwelling units submerged, people in many of the affected areas have not returned to their villages," several local persons said, adding, "Disaster management teams have paid visits but relief material has not reached several areas."

Many of the affected have said that they are not left with much food-grains and that they have been requesting the government to supply more food grains.

Again, a number of people have alleged that they have not received adequate flood relief from the government.

"The relief material is low and people affected with the flood is more. Moreover, in most of the remote areas flood relief is yet to reach," said a few.
