Severe overnight rainfall in the Naga Hills triggered devastating flash floods in parts of the Borholla region, severely impacting the villages of Matikhola, Shukanjan, and Muktinagar under the Raidangjuri panchayat. The downpour led to a sudden rise in the water level of the Kakodonga River, flooding houses and forcing villagers to evacuate during the early hours of the morning.
Residents were seen hurriedly moving their belongings, important documents, and livestock to higher grounds after flood waters began rising at an alarming rate around 3 a.m. Houses were also destroyed in the flood, while many others remain trapped, especially those with sick or bedridden members.
"The flood has destroyed everything," said a resident of Matikhola. "We had to leave our homes in the middle of the night with our cattle. Right now, we are stranded on the roadside with no food. Many people in our village are ill and unable to move. They remain trapped inside their flooded houses. We urgently appeal to the Assam Government to help us."
Flood waters have entered almost every home in Matikhola. Most people have had nothing to eat since morning, and with access to essential resources cut off, anxiety is rising in the affected communities. Another local shared, “The water in the Kakodonga river keeps rising. Most homes are submerged. We are hungry and helpless. The government needs to take some action.”
The damage has not been limited to property alone. With water levels still rising, villagers are unable to navigate through their localities. One resident reported, “We can’t even walk through the village anymore. Everything is submerged. Everything is destroyed.”
Affected individuals have made urgent appeals for emergency relief. With water levels continuing to rise and people stranded without food or shelter, the situation remains critical. The scale of the disaster demands immediate governmental intervention to prevent further suffering.
