In line with the rising demand for vegetables and leafy greens across seasons, off-season farming or protected cultivation has emerged as a vital innovation in Assam’s agricultural landscape. Recognizing its importance, the state Agriculture Department has begun placing special emphasis on promoting this method, offering farmers both training and essential infrastructure such as polyhouses.
In this direction, a district-level training session was organised today at the auditorium of Puthimari College in Kamrup district. The event was held under the initiative of the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), with support from the Kamrup District Agriculture Department.
The session was chaired by Kamalpur Agriculture Officer Dr. Nilakshi Kakati, and saw the presence of Puthimari College Principal Dr. Nityananda Kalita and progressive farmer from Rangia, Minar Ahmed, as key resource persons.
Farmers were given practical guidance on how to adopt off-season farming using polyhouse structures in a cost-effective manner. Emphasis was placed on how this method could enhance yield and income while reducing weather-related risks.
Speaking at the event, Principal Dr. Kalita proposed the setting up of a demonstration polyhouse within the college campus to offer hands-on training to students and attract them toward agriculture as a viable career option. The idea was well received, with progressive farmer Deben Deka pledging his full support to the college for the initiative.
Also present at the event were ATMA Block Technology Manager Dr. Lalita Devi, Agriculture Inspector Mukut Sharma, over 50 local farmers, and several college students.
The initiative reflects a growing push to blend education with practical agri-skills and to prepare the next generation of farmers to adopt sustainable, modern cultivation practices.
