We Don’t Want ‘Surprises’ in RS over CAB: Opposition

At the time when the Centre is planning to bring thecontentious Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) during the ongoing winter sessionof the Parliament, the opposition has taken it up with the Rajya Sabha ChairmanVenkaiah Naidu to ensure that the government does not spring surprises bybringing it without following laid procedures.

The opposition raised the matter during the business advisorycommittee meeting which was held to discuss the agenda for next week. A leaderof opposition said, "The opposition told Naidu that he should talk to thegovernment to avoid springing surprises with respect to CAB. The chair told thegovernment that parliamentary procedures are followed while introducing bills."

The leader also stated that the Jammu and KashmirReorganization Act, 2019 was tabled in the Rajya Sabha without even circulatingthe Bill to members in the upper house adding that the bill was brought evenwithout cabinet clearance.

The Centre has been pushing for the Bill while the oppositionhas expressed reservations. However, there has been strong opposition in Assamand other Northeastern states against the Bill. PM Narendra Modi had announcedthat the Bill is an "atonement of the wrong that was done during India'spartition. India will safeguard all who had been victims of thePartition".
