Air India has started disbursing the promised ₹25 lakh interim compensation to the families of the victims of the tragic Ahmedabad crash. In a statement released on Saturday, the airline confirmed that three families have already received the compensation.

This amount is in addition to the ₹1 crore (approx. £85,000) per victim announced by Tata Sons shortly after the fatal incident involving Air India flight A1171, which crashed into the BJ Medical College Hostel in Ahmedabad on June 12.

Over 270 Lives Lost, Majority Indian Nationals

The crash claimed the lives of 270 individuals, including 241 passengers and crew on board and 29 people on the ground, according to data from news agency PTI. The victims include 187 Indian nationals, 52 Britons, 7 Portuguese citizens, and one Canadian.

DNA Identification Underway, 232 Bodies Handed Over

Due to the severity of the crash, many bodies were charred beyond recognition. Air India, along with medical authorities, is assisting families through DNA identification processes. As of Saturday, 247 victims have been identified through DNA testing, and 232 bodies have been handed over to their respective families.

Dr. Rakesh Joshi, Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, stated that DNA tests remain crucial for proper identification. In at least eight cases, families have been asked to submit secondary DNA samples after the initial ones failed to yield matches.

Support for Ground Victims and Injured Continues

Air India also confirmed that it is reaching out to the injured and families of those killed on the ground to initiate the compensation process and provide support during hospital procedures.

DGCA Takes Action, Orders Termination of 3 Officials

In a significant development, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has directed Air India to terminate three officials involved in crew scheduling and rostering, citing serious lapses. The aviation regulator has also ordered the airline to initiate internal disciplinary proceedings.
