After attending a crucial all-party meeting convened on Sunday ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi launched a fierce broadside against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding that he break his prolonged silence on a series of explosive national issues — from ethnic bloodshed in Manipur to simmering security threats along India’s borders and the growing international criticism of India’s democratic credibility.
The meeting, chaired by Union Minister JP Nadda, was aimed at ensuring a smooth and productive session. But Opposition leaders, led by the Congress, used the opportunity to sound a clear warning: the Prime Minister can no longer hide behind his cabinet or scripted public events. The House, they said, must hear directly from him.
Speaking immediately after the meeting, Gogoi did not mince words. “This time we have more hope — and more urgency — that the Prime Minister will address the country through the House. Too much time has passed. The silence is deafening, and it is damaging,” he said.
Gogoi pointed to three major areas where Modi’s absence has been particularly glaring — and dangerous.
1. Explosive Remarks from the U.S. Raise Questions on India's Honour
“The recent comments from U.S. President Donald Trump cast a shadow on the courage of our armed forces and the dignity of our country. Only one man can respond to that on behalf of India — the Prime Minister himself,” Gogoi said, referring to Trump’s alleged remarks questioning India’s global standing and military posture.
“The answer to Trump cannot come from bureaucrats or TV panels. It must come from the Prime Minister — loud, clear, and in Parliament.”
2. Electoral Trust Is Crumbling — and the EC Is Silent
Gogoi slammed the Election Commission for dodging questions from political parties and failing to clarify serious concerns regarding voter transparency and institutional independence.
“When the EC refuses to speak, and the Prime Minister refuses to reassure the people, what remains of democratic trust? The electoral foundation of our republic is shaking — and Modi is watching in silence,” he said.
3. A Two-Front Threat Is Brewing — and Modi’s Missing in Action
Referencing alarming statements made by senior military officers, Gogoi highlighted the escalating two-front challenge facing India — a strategic squeeze from China, Pakistan, and even Bangladesh.
“This is not theoretical. Our borders are at risk, and defence strategy requires leadership. Yet we haven’t heard a word from the man who calls himself the ‘chowkidar’ of this nation,” Gogoi said.
On Manipur: “Two and a Half Years of Fire, and Still No Visit”
But perhaps Gogoi’s sharpest criticism was reserved for the Prime Minister’s continued indifference to Manipur, where violent ethnic clashes have left hundreds dead, thousands displaced, and the state in near-permanent unrest.
“The Prime Minister promised peace in Manipur ‘in a few months.’ It has been over two and a half years. What we see instead is a state engulfed in flames, lives lost, communities fractured — and a Prime Minister who refuses to visit,” Gogoi thundered.
“He finds time to travel the world — to speak in distant parliaments and hug foreign leaders — but has not set foot in Manipur. What explains this cruelty? What justifies this silence?”
Gogoi added that with several bills concerning Manipur set to be tabled in the upcoming session, Modi’s absence from the debate would be an insult to the people of the state and a betrayal of democratic norms.
