NEIST to Study Frequent Tremors at Baghjan

The CSIR-North-East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST) will scrutinize the reason of frequent earthquake at Baghjan areas following the blow out of a condensate gas well. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal handed over the responsibility to NEIST to examine situation after the massive fire that broke out at Baghjan oil well.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal met some senior scientists from IIT-Guwahati and CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology at his office in Janata Bhawan on Monday and requested them to start their job on an emergency basis.

It may be noted that Sonowal on his visit to Baghjan area along with Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday announced that a scientific study would be conducted to unearth the reasons leading to repeated tremors around the fire blowout areas.

Sonowal while meeting the scientists of CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology drew their attention to State government's importance to maintain sanctity and balance of environment and requested them to conduct the study into reported tremors in the area and submit a report, for the government to take appropriate and time-bound steps. Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati will also provide its expert guidance into the study and Oil India Limited would provide all inputs relevant to conduct the study.

Director CSIR-North East Institute of Scienceand Technology Dr. G. Narahari Sastry including senior scientists of theinstitution, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT-G, Dr. Sajal KantiDeb, Additional Chief Secretary Jishnu Baruah, Chief Minister's PrincipalSecretary Sanjay Lohiya along with others were present at the meeting.
