PM Narendra Modi to Meet US VP Kamala Harris Today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet US Vice-President Kamala Harris on Thursday. This will be the first in-person meeting between the two leaders.

Kamala Harris is the first-ever person of Indian origin to be elected as the vice-president of the United States.

The two leaders had on earlier spoke over the phone during the COVID-19 crisis.

Prime Minister Modi embarked on his three-day visit to the United States on Wednesday. This is the first foreign trip of PM Modi in nearly six months and second since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On his first day in the US, PM Modi participated in a virtual global COVID-19 summit that was hosted by US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Addressing the summit, the Prime Minister said that India shared its vaccine production with 95 other countries, and with UN peacekeepers.

He said, “Like a family, the world also stood with India when we were going through a second wave. For the solidarity and support extended to India, I thank you all.”

The aim of the summit was to rally world leaders, philanthropists, civil society, NGOs, and industry “to align on a common vision to end COVID-19 together” by the end of 2022, the White House said in a press release.

On Friday, PM Modi is scheduled to hold maiden bilateral meeting with President Joe Biden and participate in the first in-person Quad Summit at the White House.

After concluding his engagements in Washington, PM Modi will travel to New York to attend the UN General Assembly on September 25.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to address the General Debate of the High-Level Segment of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
