Assam Police on Thursday morning seized nearly 200 kilograms of beef and arrested one person in Dhubri district, despite the ongoing state-wide ban on its transport and sale.
The operation was carried out in the early hours by a team from Golakganj Police Station, led by Officer-in-Charge Debajit Kalita, following a credible tip-off. Acting swiftly, the team intercepted a suspicious two-wheeler without a number plate near Biratnagar Chariali along National Highway 17, heading toward Gauripur.
On being flagged down, the rider attempted to flee but lost control of the vehicle and crashed. While the driver managed to escape, police apprehended one individual from the spot, identified as Azizur Rahman, a resident of Mansai under Bakshirhat Police Station in West Bengal.
Upon inspection, officials discovered approximately two quintals of beef concealed within the vehicle. The meat, banned under state law, was seized along with the scooty. Police suspect the consignment was part of a broader cross-border smuggling network operating between West Bengal and Assam.
Investigations are currently underway to trace others involved in the racket and determine the extent of the illegal trade.
