Thiyam, a recipient of the Padma Shri (1989) and Padma Bhushan, was celebrated for his visionary integration of traditional Manipuri art forms with contemporary dramaturgy. As the founder of Chorus Repertory Theatre in 1976, he played a pivotal role in elevating regional performance practices to the national and global stage.

Born in 1948 in Manipur, Thiyam graduated from the National School of Drama (NSD) and later served as its Director. He became a key figure in the Theatre of Roots movement, which sought to reconnect Indian theatre with its indigenous heritage. His productions such as “Uttar Priyadarshi,” “Andha Yug,” and “Chakravyuh” are regarded as milestones for their philosophical depth, political commentary, and poetic storytelling.

Known for his stylized movement, powerful visual imagery, and the use of Manipuri martial arts, dance, and ritual, Thiyam’s theatre transcended boundaries, earning him acclaim across continents.

His passing has sent ripples through the artistic community, with tributes pouring in from fellow artists, cultural institutions, and international admirers. Many have called his contribution “irreplaceable,” crediting him with bringing Manipuri theatre into global consciousness.

Thiyam's life and work remain a testament to the power of theatre as a medium of cultural expression and resistance. His voice may have fallen silent, but his stage will echo for generations.
