US President Donald Trump has spoken out about the ongoing war between Israel and Iran, saying he is deeply worried about the rising violence and loss of life. Trump said he has a plan in mind but did not share details, adding, “Anything could happen.”
Talking to reporters on Wednesday, Trump said, “They should have made the deal. I had a great deal for them,” referring to past talks with Iran. He mentioned that Iran had shown interest in coming to the White House, but the talks didn’t go through.
“We talked about it for 60 days, and in the end, they decided not to do it, and now they wish they had,” Trump said. “It’s late to meet, but they want to, and they want to come to the White House. I may do that… anything could happen.”
Trump also said he was heading into a “war room” meeting and spoke emotionally about the situation. “We are in the midst of something terrible. I hate to see so much death and destruction,” he said.
While he didn’t confirm what steps the US might take, Trump hinted that decisions would be made based on how things unfold. “I have ideas as to what I could do, but they are not final. I like to finalise one second before it's due. Things change. Especially with war…”
The fighting between Israel and Iran has now continued for seven days. Israeli officials said 24 people have been killed and hundreds injured by Iranian missile strikes. Reports from Iran, shared by Anadolu Agency, claim that 585 people have died and over 1,300 have been injured in Israeli attacks.
CNN reported that Trump held a closed-door meeting on Wednesday to discuss possible US action. On Thursday, Israel’s military said it had carried out a series of airstrikes in Tehran and other parts of Iran. In response, Iran activated its air defence systems.
