Istanbul, once known as Constantinople, was the capital of the Byzantine Empire until the city was conquered in 1453 by the Ottomans. Upon the conquest, the monument, which was till then a cathedral, was converted into a mosque by Sultan Mehmed II. It was turned into a museum in the early 1930s under Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
