Elon Musk Breaks with Trump, Forms New Political Party in U.S.
Tech mogul Elon Musk has launched a new political party in the United States, aiming to challenge what he calls the nation’s “one-party system.” In a series of posts on his social media platform X, the SpaceX and Tesla CEO declared the formation of the America Party, signaling a sharp break from former ally and U.S. President Donald Trump.
“Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” Musk announced on Saturday, calling the current political landscape a "one-party system" rife with “waste and graft.”
The move marks a dramatic escalation in Musk's growing feud with Trump, whom he previously supported as a major political donor during the 2024 presidential campaign. The rift deepened after Musk’s brief and controversial stint as head of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), where he pushed to slash federal spending and eliminate government jobs. His efforts clashed directly with Trump’s expansive domestic spending agenda.
Musk has been a vocal critic of what he describes as “debt slavery,” taking aim at the president’s flagship “One Big Beautiful Bill” — a massive federal spending package that recently cleared Congress despite fierce opposition from fiscal conservatives. The legislation is expected to add over $3.4 trillion to the U.S. deficit over the next decade, according to independent projections.
Furious over the bill’s passage, Musk vowed to politically target Republican lawmakers who supported it, accusing them of betraying promises to reduce federal spending. “They will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth,” Musk said earlier this week.
The tech billionaire also accused the current political structure of failing to represent the American people, launching a poll on July 4th — U.S. Independence Day — asking users whether they wanted “independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system.” The poll received over 1.2 million responses, with a 2-to-1 majority reportedly voting in favor of a new political alternative.
“You want a new political party, and you shall have it!” Musk wrote.
He further underscored his stance by sharing a meme depicting a two-headed snake — symbolizing the Democratic and Republican parties — with the caption: “End the Uniparty.”
‘Laser-Focus’ Strategy for Congressional Disruption
Although the actual electoral impact of the America Party remains uncertain ahead of the 2026 midterms and the 2028 presidential election, Musk has begun outlining a tactical roadmap. He proposed a targeted campaign strategy focused on a small number of vulnerable Senate and House seats to tilt the balance of power in Congress.
“One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,” he posted on X.
In the U.S., all 435 House seats are up for election every two years, while one-third of the Senate — whose members serve six-year terms — also face voters during midterms.
However, political analysts warn that third-party bids have historically reshaped election outcomes by splitting votes. Ross Perot’s independent presidential run in 1992, for example, drew support away from then-incumbent President George H.W. Bush, helping pave the way for Democrat Bill Clinton’s victory. One user on X summed up this sentiment bluntly: “You are pulling a Ross Perot, and I don’t like it.”
Trump-Musk Feud Turns Personal
The clash between Musk and Trump has become deeply personal. After Musk’s aggressive public campaign against the spending bill and Republican lawmakers who backed it, Trump reportedly threatened to take federal action against the billionaire’s companies.
Asked by reporters if he would consider revoking Musk’s U.S. citizenship or targeting his businesses, the president responded cryptically, “We’ll have to take a look.”
Musk, who was born in South Africa and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2002, has not publicly responded to the threat, but has doubled down on his criticism of both major parties.
As the 2026 elections draw nearer, all eyes will be on whether Musk’s America Party can build real political traction or if it will serve mainly as a spoiler — a new force shaking up the entrenched political order from outside the system.
